Last night when we were driving into Palm Springs, we kept seeing blinking lights - like twinkle lights - but didn't know what they were on top of. By the light of day, we found out that it was a windmill farm. There's a constant breeze coming thru the Banning Pass so the windmills are in an ideal place. We took pictures but it's still pretty hazy from the Station Fire so they're not very visible.
Does anyone know who Glum is? (Hint: Lilliputian in cartoon version of Gulliver's Travels). We decided that the desk clerk at our hotel is Glum. We asked him for recommendations and he said he didn't like to do anything and whatever there was to do didn't interest him.
We spent a couple hours today on Mt. San Jacinto, riding up on the Palms Springs Aerial Tramway - we recommend it. The temperature difference was about 30-35 degrees, plus it was very pleasant and peaceful up there. Once we came down, we stopped into a local casino for lunch. We played a bit and I walked out with an extra $100 - woo hoo!. After that we spent some time looking for an area called Las Palmas - supposed to be a swanky area. We drove around a few ordinary neighborhoods before we realized that we were heading in the wrong direction. When we finally found the Las Palmas area, we were a bit let down - most homes are not very visible and what we did see was nothing spectacular. If you like mid-century homes, this is the area too find them. We also discovered that we are visiting at the end of the off-season so we pretty much have the town to ourselves along with a few other travelers. Even the locals "get out of Dodge" in the summer. This evening we went to Village Fest - a big street fair - we each splurged on a pair of very cute ear cuffs. We stopped at LG's Steakhouse for a drink and appetizers.. Our waitress was Mima - she's originally from Algeria but has lived in Palm Springs for 26 years. Since it was slow, we spent quite a bit talking with her - what a hoot! In addition to being very hot, it's also humid - blamed on the Station Fire.
Tomorrow morning we head out to Flagstaff, AZ plus a surprise stop along the way. Stay tuned.....
